I HAWKED ON THE STREETS TO SUPPORT MY SINGLE MUM - DJ LASCOME

CAN WE MEET YOU?

My name is Olasunkanmi Junior Sowemimo, I am a Nigerian based in South Africa, I am a disk jockey.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY YOUR FAMILY BACKGROUND

I was born into a wealthy home,  my father was the first son of his family while I am also the first son for him.  My father died when I was four years old, but my mum took us away because my father's family were fighting for  the properties . My mum raised us as a single parent,  it wasn't easy,  I hawked and sold different things just to support her,  but I thank God now that everything is fine.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I attended Adegoke Primary School and Community Work Yard  Secondary School, Lagos. After my secondary education I began to get busy doing one hustle or the other. My mother wanted me to go to further my education but I had a different plan and schooling was not part of it.

WHY CHOOSE TO BECOME A DEEJAY?

I choose to become a deejay because I love music so much and I love to make people dance.  I love to see smile in people faces and I like the fact that people are happy when I do my work.

WHO IS YOUR MENTOR?

My mentor is DJ Snoop The Damager.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE ARTISTE?

My favourite artiste is Olamide Baddo.

HOW DID YOU START YOUR WORK AS A DEEJAY?

I started by following my deejay friends to events and looking at them play,  I learnt from a friend of mine called Dj Genesis and then I also got more training from Dj Tinny and Dj Most Wanted, all in Surulere.

ANY CHALLENGES SO FAR BY CHOOSING YOUR JOB?

Yes,  the challenge I can say is that my family was not in support of the deejay thing,  they ask if it is this deejay job I will use to feed my family,  they downgrade the beautiful job but I don't give on to their pressure because I love what I do so much.

TELL US ABOUT LIFE IN SOUTH AFRICA

life in South Africa is not easy,  it's is a nice lace to be if you have money.  You can just come for a visit and go back but not to stay,  a lot of foreigners have been here for 10 or 20 years and still struggling without success but I thank God for my own case, there is no place like home.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORKING IN NIGERIA AND IN SOUTH AFRICA?

There are lots of job opportunities here in South Africa but it's is not easy for a foreigner to get job.  You can't work if you don't have your permit.
In Nigeria,  there are job opportunities also but the difference is that it is easier to work in Nigeria even if you are a foreigner.

ARE YOU A CLUB DEEJAY OR A RADIO DJ?

Yeah,  I play both club and radio but not as full-time, I go there as a guest deejay and I get my money.  I play in shows also and help artistes run promotion here in South Africa.

WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU WORKING ON PRESENTLY?

I am working on a collaboration  with Mafikizolo,  I won't say too much about it now but expect something from Classic Dj Lascome and Mafikizolo soon.

WHICH ARTISTE IS THE BIGGEST NIGERIAN IN SOUTH AFRICA?

Burna Boy. He is based here in South Africa and he is doing really well.

ADVICE TO YOUNG AND ASPIRING DEEJAYS

My advice to all young and aspiring deejays is to be humble, you don't know who is going to help you so you have to respect everybody and not be proud at all.

MESSAGE TO YOUR FANS AND LOVED ONES

I will like to appreciate all of you who have been supporting  me,  thank you so much.  Please keep supporting,  and I pray God be with you and bless you abundantly.  I promise to never let you down,  may God be with us all. Thank you.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT NIGERIA?

I think Nigeria is a great country,. Apart from the fact that Nigeria is my country,  I love Nigeria and I like the people,  they are wise and clever people. We are the best in the world,  whether in entertainment  and everything.  I love Nigeria.

WHAT WILL YOU DO DIFFERENTLY  IF YOU BECAME THE PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA?

(Laughs) Well, to be honest,  I don't even have a dream of becoming the president of Nigeria but if God puts me there,  I will do some things differently.  I will work on light, water and stop corruption.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT QUADOOWEAR?

Quadoowear is a very quality product,  you can't compare any other designer to Quadoowear.  I like the customized name on it and whenever I put it on,  it makes me look unique.
