CHAPTER ONE
(Episode 1)
I thought I was the only one going through mess untill I met this young girl. It really can be unimaginable how parents can be so unfair, telling lies to their children yet claiming to love them and want the best for them. When I saw her, she was looking very unkept, had no slippers on and her left eye swollen, she obviously had been beaten by who I can't imagine.
At first I was irritated but I try to be careful judging people, so I said to myself; she must have done something really bad. Still, if someone hasn't stolen, how could she be going through this? My inquinsitive spirit won't let me rest so I moved close to her and said "Hello", but she gave no response. I was so curious so I asked her, "who did this to you?" She couldn't hold back her tears, trust me, it was so emotional, to my greatest surprise she said it was her aunt who did that to her. "Your aunt?" I asked, and she replied, "Yes", "You mean your mum's younger sister?" I asked, but she said "No", "your dad's younger sister?" "No", she replied. Then I remembered that in this part of the world you call the person you work for as a maid "aunt". It's really crazy how you call someone who use you as a slave "aunt", I thought aunts are used for confidants.
I asked for her name, her age and what happened! Then she said "my name is Chioma, I will be twelve years old by August , I am the first child in my family and I have three other younger sisters and a brother."
There was this day my parents called me to commend my efforts for trying to help the family by hawking , the said that things are more expensive now and they needed more support for me and my siblings. Then my mom said I will have to stay with my aunt who will sponsor my education and support the home with money monthly. I was really happy, but I had a rethink and asked about her market, she said my immediate younger sister Nneka will do that after school and will also join me later. I didn't know my parents has been paid for me to work as a maid for my aunt who is a single mother of a girl of about four years old."
It has been hell for me, the work is too much and to make matters worse, aunty said I won't go to school because she didn't agree that with my mum. Esther's life is so unfair.
